The Historical High Points of the FIFA World Cup
We have delighted in witnessing the world’s top national teams vie for the title of best of all since 1930. As you may guess, there have been some truly incredible moments. But which World Cup moments stand out as the most memorable?
We’ve selected some of the most memorable events from the tournament’s illustrious past, albeit they are by no means all-inclusive. Let’s get started!
Brazil 1970: The Team of the Century?
Brazil are arguably the most notable team in World Cup history, so it makes sense to start with them. While this is not a moment per se, we had so much fun watching this Brazilian side that it passed by in what felt like a moment. For one summer, the Selecao captured hearts and minds worldwide.
The 1970 Brazil team swaggered into Mexico and handled the conditions, notably the soaring heat, better than anyone else. Led by legends like Jairzinho and Tostao, as well as flying full-back Carlos Alberto, Brazil were tournament favourites.
They had the ace in the pack, too, with the legendary Pelé, who would go on to provide some incredible moments. 1970 was Pele’s year, and it was only down to saves like Gordon Banks’ “salmon” save – rated the best save in WC history – that Brazil didn’t win the tournament even easier.
In the end, they won it in style, crushing Italy 4-1 in the final.
Brazil 2014: A Scandal at the National Level
The “big three” of the World Cup are thought to be Brazil, Germany, and Italy; they are the most successful teams and have the most memorable moments during their numerous matches. However, many consider the 2014 tournament to be a turning point in the history of the sport.
Argentina won the World Cup in 2022, the first South American team to do so since Brazil’s victory in 2002. In 2014, Brazil had to win to appease the people because it was hosting the event at an absurd cost to a financially troubled country.
Following thrilling victories to go to the semifinals, Brazil came to play their European opponent. With the intention of winning, Germany had also traveled to Brazil. They now had the most fashionable national team in recent memory after more than ten years of development.
Brazil’s captain, Thiago Silva, was suspended during the quarterfinals. Additionally, Neymar, their lucky forward, suffered a severe back injury. Brazilian players established the mood before the game even began by displaying intense emotion and holding up Neymar’s shirt.
Germany was ahead by five goals before the half. By the end of the second half, Germany had a seven-nil lead. The crowd appeared dejected, and the image of an elderly guy holding his World Cup replica still sticks in people’s minds. In fact, Brazil’s last-minute consolation goal felt almost offensive.
Brazil has not yet returned. Brazilian football is in perhaps its worse situation ever as Meek leaves for Belgium in 2018 and Croatia in 2022, while their rivals Argentina finish their own World Cup drought.
