Barcelona Legend Makes History Again.

Alexia Putellas has once again reached the top of women’s football. The Spanish midfielder has won the 2026 Women’s Ballon d’Or, claiming the prestigious individual award for the third time in her remarkable career.

The announcement, made at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London on 26 October, adds another extraordinary chapter to the story of one of the most influential players of her generation.

After helping Barcelona enjoy a trophy-filled 2025–26 campaign, Putellas has received individual recognition for her contribution to the women’s game. Her latest triumph reinforces her status as a footballer whose influence extends beyond statistics, medals and individual honours.

For Barcelona supporters, Spanish football fans and admirers of women’s football around the world, this is another moment to celebrate.

Alexia Putellas: Three-Time Queen of Women’s Football

Winning the Ballon d’Or once is an extraordinary achievement. Winning it three times places a player in an even more exclusive group.

Putellas previously claimed the Women’s Ballon d’Or in 2021 and 2022, becoming the first player to win the women’s award in consecutive years. Her latest victory makes her a three-time winner, underlining the remarkable standard she has maintained throughout her career.

Her success reflects more than technical ability. Putellas is known for her vision, close control, intelligent movement and ability to influence the rhythm of a match.

Operating in midfield, she can help her team retain possession, create opportunities in the final third and connect defensive and attacking phases. Her understanding of space allows her to find passing options that others may overlook, while her composure helps her make important decisions under pressure.

These qualities have made her a central figure in Barcelona’s rise to prominence in women’s football.

Now, another Ballon d’Or belongs to her.

The Barcelona Season Behind Her Triumph

Putellas’s 2026 victory follows a successful campaign with Barcelona, during which the club secured a treble and the Spanish Super Cup.

Winning major trophies requires more than a collection of talented individuals. It demands tactical discipline, consistency, teamwork and the ability to deliver in decisive moments.

Putellas has been an important part of Barcelona’s footballing identity, contributing the technical quality and midfield intelligence that help the team control matches.

Her role illustrates why midfielders deserve recognition in individual award discussions. While goals and assists are easily counted, other contributions are more difficult to measure: positioning, tempo control, decision-making and the ability to make teammates more effective.

Putellas brings these qualities together with the experience of competing at the highest level.

Her third Ballon d’Or is therefore a celebration of individual excellence within a successful team.

From Barcelona Icon to a New Chapter in England

One of the most interesting aspects of Putellas’s story is the timing of this award.

After spending 14 years at Barcelona, she moved to Women’s Super League side London City Lionesses in July 2026, beginning a new chapter in her playing career.

Her departure marked a significant change for a player closely associated with Barcelona’s modern era.

During her time at the Spanish club, Putellas became one of its defining figures, helping establish its reputation as a leading force in women’s football. She experienced the demands of competing for domestic and European honours while helping inspire a generation of young players.

Moving to England presents a different challenge.

The Women’s Super League offers a new competitive environment, different opponents and fresh expectations. For Putellas, it is an opportunity to bring her experience and leadership to a new team while continuing to compete at the highest level.

Winning the Ballon d’Or after such a major career transition makes this moment particularly memorable.

It celebrates what she achieved with Barcelona while creating a new storyline for the next stage of her career.

What Makes Alexia Putellas Such a Special Player?

Putellas’s greatness cannot be explained by trophies alone. Her style of play and influence on the pitch help explain why she has remained among the most celebrated footballers in the women’s game.

1. Exceptional technical quality

Putellas is comfortable receiving the ball under pressure, controlling possession and finding teammates in tight spaces. Her technique allows her to maintain control in demanding midfield battles.

2. Vision and creativity

A midfielder must see opportunities before they fully develop. Putellas has the awareness to recognise passing lanes, connect attacks and help her team move the ball into dangerous areas.

3. Tactical intelligence

Her contribution is not limited to moments on the ball. Positioning, timing and understanding the team’s structure are essential to her role.

4. Leadership and experience

Years of competing at the highest level have helped establish Putellas as an influential presence. Her experience is valuable in matches where composure and decision-making can determine the result.

5. Consistency at the highest level

The Ballon d’Or is an individual award, and earning it three times demonstrates the extraordinary level of recognition Putellas has received from the football world.

Together, these qualities explain why her name belongs among the leading figures in women’s football.

A Landmark Moment for Women’s Football

Putellas’s latest victory is also significant for the broader development of women’s football.

Individual awards play a role in telling that story. They recognise exceptional performances and give supporters an opportunity to celebrate the athletes who help shape the sport.

Putellas is one of the most recognisable figures of this era. Her achievements with Barcelona and Spain have helped make her an inspiration for aspiring players who want to pursue football professionally.

Her third Ballon d’Or sends a powerful message: sustained excellence deserves recognition.

The Competition for the 2026 Women’s Ballon d’Or

The women’s award recognises individual excellence in a field filled with outstanding players.

Putellas’s achievement comes amid strong competition from established stars and emerging talents. Players across European leagues and international competitions continue to raise the standard of women’s football.

The debate surrounding the award often centres on how individual performance should be measured. Goals, assists and trophies matter, but they do not capture every contribution a player makes.

For midfielders such as Putellas, the influence on a team’s structure and performance can be particularly important.

Her victory recognises the strength of her overall case during the relevant award period and places another major honour alongside her previous achievements.

The result will undoubtedly generate discussion among supporters, analysts and players. That debate is part of what makes the Ballon d’Or one of football’s most closely followed individual awards.
